Stamped Concrete Overlay and Resurfacing in Round Rock

A new surface on old concrete: stamped overlays, smooth or textured skim coats, and refinishing for patios, walks, pool decks and driveways that are sound but worn, stained or dated. The first step is checking that the slab is worth covering.

Concrete Resurfacing Companies: Is Your Slab a Candidate?

An overlay bonds to the slab underneath, so it can only be as good as that slab. Here's what we look for:

  • Good candidate: surface scaling, stains, old paint, dated broom finish, shallow pop-outs, hairline cracks that aren't moving.
  • Maybe: a few wider cracks that can be repaired and jointed first.
  • Not a candidate: sunken or rocking panels, heaved edges, cracks that keep opening, water coming up from below.

On Round Rock's east side, a slab that's still going up and down with the clay will crack a new overlay too. That kind of slab needs repair or replacement, not a new surface.

  • Stamped overlayPatio · Pool deck · Walk

A thicker overlay layer pressed with stamp mats. A slate or stone look without tearing out the slab.

  • Spray-texture ("knockdown")Pool deck · Patio

Troweled-down texture that stays cooler and grippy for bare feet. A common pool deck refresh.

  • Traffic-grade skim coatDriveway · Walk

A polymer-modified layer made for tires, in gray or a tint, with broom texture for traction.

  • Stenciled patternPatio · Walk · Driveway

Paper stencils make tile or brick lines in a thin coat. Flatter than stamped work.

  • Restore and resealDriveway · Patio · Pool deck · Walk

Clean, repair, sealer. No new layer. Often all an older stamped patio needs.

Heat note

Overlays and Texas sun

Thin cement layers dry out fast when it's in the upper 90s. We schedule overlay work early in the day, dampen the slab as the product calls for, and stay out of direct midday sun on big areas.

Darker overlay colors get hot to walk on and fade faster in full sun. Around pools, lighter colors are better.

Concrete Restoration Contractors: From Bare Slab to New Surface

  1. Prep

Pressure-wash, strip old sealer or paint, and grind or shot-blast so the overlay can bond. Most overlay failures start with skipped prep.

  2. Repair

Fill cracks and spalls, and mark existing joints to carry through.

  3. Overlay

Apply the base coat and finish coat, then stamp, texture or trowel. Cut or reopen joints.

  4. Seal

Seal it once cured, with anti-slip in wet areas.

Resurfacing and Overlay Questions in Round Rock

What does a stamped concrete overlay cost compared with new concrete?

An overlay skips tear-out and hauling, which is often a big part of a replacement price. Surface prep, crack repair, the number of coats and the pattern still add up. On a slab that's structurally fine, an overlay usually comes in below full replacement. On a slab that's failing underneath, it's wasted money. We'll say which yours is, and price it in writing after we see it.

How long does an overlay last?

It depends on the slab under it and the traffic on top. On sound concrete with good prep, overlays hold up well. On a slab that's moving, cracks come back through. Resealing every few years helps with sun and wear.

    Can you resurface a driveway?

Yes, if the driveway is sound: no sunken panels, no rocking slabs, no cracks that keep opening. Driveway overlays have to handle tires turning, so we use a polymer-modified system made for traffic, not a decorative patio coating.

Will cracks show through the overlay?

Active cracks will. We repair cracks before overlaying and carry existing control joints through the new surface, so the slab keeps moving at the joints. Hairline cracks that aren't moving are usually covered.

Is resurfacing the same as sealing?

No. Sealer is a thin protective coat. Resurfacing adds a new cementitious layer that changes the color and texture. Plenty of tired-looking concrete just needs cleaning and sealing, which costs much less.
